Easter 2019
This year for Easter we knew we would be traveling home to Georgia the following week so we didn’t make any big plans for the actual day. We decided that after church we would grill some steaks and try out an Easter egg hunt for our dogs. Yes, you read that right. We did an egg hunt for our dogs, we are those people. I am also now a huge fan of starting a new tradition of having steak for every holiday meal.
I wasn’t sure how it was going to go. If we would hide all the eggs and then the dogs wouldn’t be interested and we’d have to go pick them back up again. Maybe they wouldn’t be able to open the eggs or worse they would try to just eat them. Our dogs are pretty well behaved once you get past the jumping and barking when someone walks in the door. They aren’t destructive and generally just go with the flow, even with all of Sly’s “quirks.” So we weren’t too worried about them choking on an egg.
We took some small treats that we had and put them inside 10 eggs. You could also use dog food or cheerios or a million different things. We’ve already decided that next year we will break the treats into smaller pieces that way we can hide more eggs without making the dogs sick. Next year’s plan is already worked out because the dogs absolutely loved it. They, especially Sly, were actually pretty good at it and needed very little instruction or help.
We showed the dogs that the eggs had treats in them and then Tim went outside and hid the eggs. I’m not sure why but I thought this might be too hard for them so I let the dogs watch Tim hide some of the eggs from the back the deck. When we told them to start Sly took off. He was certainly in his element. We actually had to hold Sly back because he was getting all the eggs before Maverick could.
Its easy to see that the dogs had fun, but so did Tim and I. We will definitely be doing this again year after year!
